Listings from The News-Star in Monroe, Louisiana by SueLynn Sandifer beginning
Wednesday, November 5, 1997.
Beginning November 22, 1997 the News-Star began sending the death
notices via email and I will be changing them to html and putting
them on this site. Much thanks to Buster Wolfe, Kathy Spurlock
(Editor) and the News-Star for participating in this project.
Our known Ouachita Parish newspapers begin with the Washita Gazette
newspaper, May 25, 1825. There is an edition of an earlier newspaper
from 1823 that is in a private collection. The Gazette collection
ends with the November 29, 1825 edition. The next known surviving
newspaper is the Monroe Register, December 1, 1859 - November
22, 1860. There are no newspapers from the Civil War period available,
and the newspapers pick back up after the war with the Weekly
Telegraph, September 18, 1865. During and after Reconstruction,
there were several newspapers publishing, among them the Daily
Telegraph, the Ouachita Telegraph, The Monroe Bulletin, and Louisiana
Intelligencer. From 1890 to May, 1909 there are few surviving
newspapers, maybe less than a dozen issues. Persons researching
this time period are asked to check surrounding parish newspapers
to see if they carried Monroe items. For example, issues of the
Richland Beacon survive from this era. From June 1909 to the present,
the Monroe News-Star is available on film.
Time periods for which there are no Ouachita Parish newspapers (or very few):
TO MEET US ON A BLISSFUL SHORE: COLLECTED OUACHITA PARISH OBITUARIES
is a three-volume set which includes obituaries from Ouachita Parish and around the state from 1825 to 1908 compiled by Lora Diane Peppers. The compiler has traveled all over Louisiana to find copies of old Monroe and West Monroe papers and has collected from them all accounts of death that were published. Death accounts come from all North Louisiana Parishes, and most of the Southern parishes. Many come from New Orleans. Profits from the sale of these three volumes will benefit the Ouachita Parish Public Library Genealogy/Special Collections department and the Friends of Ouachita Public Library.
